My background with dogs
I'm a software engineer by trade and a lifelong German Shepherd owner by heart. I got my first shepherd, Bruno, when I was nine years old, and I've shared a house with the breed ever since — currently a four-year-old named Miso who supervises every line of code I write from a bed under my desk.
Dog Size Guide started as a frustrated weekend project. I'd ordered two crates in a row for Miso as a puppy that were the wrong size — the first was too cramped, the second so oversized she used one corner as a bathroom. Every online chart contradicted the next, and none of them showed the math. So I built the tool I wished I'd had.
Today we're a small, independent team of pet-loving developers based in Austin, Texas. We cross-reference breed-club standards with veterinary literature, hand-review every recommendation, and refuse retailer commissions on our sizing advice — because the only way this tool stays trustworthy is if the number we give you is the number your dog actually needs.
The site's mission
Dog Size Guide exists to give every dog owner a fast, accurate, no-nonsense way to pick the right crate size — in under a minute, with zero guesswork. Every recommendation is math-first: crate length should exceed your dog's body length by about 4 inches, and height should clear the top of the head by about 2 inches, so your dog can stand, turn, and lie fully stretched out.
We cover 38 breeds with detailed size pages and offer weight-based and measurement-based calculators for every dog in between. The resource hub adds deeper training and buying guides for owners who want to understand the "why" behind the number.
How the data is put together
Breed weight ranges come from breed-club standards cross-referenced with contemporary veterinary literature. Sizing math follows the widely accepted welfare guideline used by shelter, veterinary, and crate-manufacturer sources. Recommendations are hand-reviewed — nothing on the site is scraped or auto-generated.
When new research changes something (heat stress guidance for brachycephalic breeds, updated weight standards, new joint-development findings), pages are revised and the "Reviewed" date at the bottom of each article updates.
Independence
Dog Size Guide is independent. We don't sell crates, we don't take retailer commissions on our sizing recommendations, and we don't partner with any specific crate brand. Our only goal is to be the most helpful, honest crate sizing resource on the web.
