About Akita sizing

Akitas span a wide adult weight range, and males often run noticeably larger than females. If your dog is at either end of that range, the measurement tab will give you a tighter answer than the breed average.

In depth

Akita crate guide

Independent, aloof, and thick-coated

Akitas are a Japanese guardian breed with a temperament closer to a Great Pyrenees than to a Labrador — they were bred to think for themselves, they're reserved with strangers, and they don't take to confinement as easily as retrievers or shepherds. Crate training an Akita requires patience and consistency; it is not fast.

The 48" crate fits most adults (70–130 lb). Heavy-duty construction is important; Akitas that don't want to be crated will test the hardware.

Coat and temperature

The Akita double coat is dense and cold-adapted. Warm indoor rooms — anything much above 72°F — will have a crated Akita struggling. Ventilation-first crate placement, never covered, wire only. Do not add blankets in summer; the dog will avoid them.

Shedding is heavy and continuous. Practical crate hygiene means washable mats and daily brushing to reduce coat load inside the crate.

Same-sex dog aggression

This is breed-specific and worth flagging: Akitas frequently develop same-sex dog aggression as adults, even with dogs they were raised alongside. If you're crating multiple dogs in the same room, physically separate the crates and don't stack Akita crates near other same-sex dogs. It's a well-documented breed trait, not a training failure.

Frequently asked

Akita crate size questions

What size crate does a Akita need?+

A typical adult Akita weighs 70–130 lb and fits a 42" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 42" gives you that.

What size crate for a Akita puppy?+

Most Akita puppies do best in their adult-size 42" crate with a divider that you slide back as they grow. Buying a small crate first and replacing it later usually costs more.

Do male and female Akitas need different crate sizes?+

Yes — males of this breed often run noticeably larger than females. If your dog is near the top of the 70–130 lb range, measure body length and standing height to confirm the fit.

Is a bigger crate better for a Akita?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Akita who's already trained, going one size up from the 42" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
