Standard poodle crate guide

Athletic, smart, and taller than people expect

Standard poodles are 40–70 lb and 20–24" at the shoulder — genuinely large dogs, and often taller than their weight suggests. The 42" crate fits most adults; internal height matters here because poodles are lanky and will duck in shorter crates.

This is a working retriever breed under the topiary coat. Standards need real exercise — an hour+ daily of running, swimming, or structured activity — and they're smart enough to invent problems if bored. Crate training goes smoothly if the dog is tired and mentally engaged; it fails miserably if you skip the exercise piece.

Coat management inside the crate

Poodle coat doesn't shed but does mat when crushed. Sleeping for hours on rough crate bedding produces mats along flanks and hips. Use a smooth, firm mat (not looped fabric or shag), keep the coat in a shorter working clip if you crate for long periods, and brush regularly.

Velcro and clever

Standards form intense attachments to their people and are among the smartest breeds — often problematic when combined with confinement. A standard poodle who decides the crate is boring will try to open it. Two-point latches and consistent enrichment (frozen KONGs, snuffle mats, puzzle feeders) are worth the investment.

Frequently asked

Standard poodle crate size questions

What size crate does a Standard poodle need?+

A typical adult Standard poodle weighs 40–70 lb and fits a 36" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 36" gives you that.

What size crate for a Standard poodle puppy?+

Most Standard poodle puppies do best in their adult-size 36" crate with a divider that you slide back as they grow. Buying a small crate first and replacing it later usually costs more.

Do male and female Standard poodles need different crate sizes?+

Yes — males of this breed often run somewhat larger than females. If your dog is near the top of the 40–70 lb range, measure body length and standing height to confirm the fit.

Is a bigger crate better for a Standard poodle?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Standard poodle who's already trained, going one size up from the 36" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
