About Pomeranian sizing
Pomeranians stay small as adults, so the recommended crate is genuinely sized for them — not oversized. If you're crate-training a puppy or want extra room to stretch, many owners size up by one (e.g. a 24" instead of a 22") for comfort.
In depth
Pomeranian crate guide
A double-coated toy dog that overheats
Pomeranians are 3–7 lb but carry a full double coat descended from sled dogs. That coat is beautiful and completely inappropriate for warm indoor crating. Ventilation-first crate placement, no covers in summer, and never shave the coat — it damages the coat structure and doesn't actually help cooling.
The 18" crate is right. Don't size up; small dogs feel safer in snug enclosures.
Barking, fragility, and dental issues
Poms bark at everything. Position the crate away from windows and doors to reduce triggers. They're also fragile — small dogs jumping from raised crates break legs at alarming rates. Ground-level crating is safer.
Dental disease is nearly universal in the breed. Don't feed dry kibble in the crate as the primary meal; the small mouth and crowded teeth make crumbs harder to clear.
Frequently asked
Pomeranian crate size questions
What size crate does a Pomeranian need?+
A typical adult Pomeranian weighs 3–7 lb and fits a 22" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 22" gives you that.
What size crate for a Pomeranian puppy?+
Puppies of small breeds usually fit the adult 22" crate from the start — use a divider to shrink the space while house-training.
Do male and female Pomeranians need different crate sizes?+
Not by much — male and female Pomeranians tend to land in the same 22" crate. The weight spread is small enough that one size works for both.
Is a bigger crate better for a Pomeranian?+
Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Pomeranian who's already trained, going one size up from the 22" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
