Small, sweet, and often over-attached

American Cocker spaniels are 20–30 lb and fit the 30" crate. Temperamentally they're people-focused and often prone to separation anxiety — velcro isn't quite the right word, but they don't cope well with isolation. Crate placement in main living areas, gradual separation training, and short daily practice departures make the difference between a comfortable crated Cocker and an anxious one.

Ear management inside the crate

Cockers have long, hanging ears with heavy fur, and those ears trap moisture. Ear infections are the most common health issue in the breed. If your Cocker eats or drinks in the crate, their ears will drag through it — use narrow shallow bowls, or clip ears back with a snood during meals. Wipe ears out after crate meals as a routine.

Coat matting from crate rest

The Cocker coat mats where it gets crushed — armpits, chest, behind ears — and long crate sessions accelerate the problem. Regular brushing (2–3x weekly minimum) and a smooth crate mat rather than shag or loop fabric help.

Frequently asked

Cocker spaniel crate size questions

What size crate does a Cocker spaniel need?+

A typical adult Cocker spaniel weighs 20–30 lb and fits a 30" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 30" gives you that.

What size crate for a Cocker spaniel puppy?+

Most Cocker spaniel puppies do best in their adult-size 30" crate with a divider that you slide back as they grow. Buying a small crate first and replacing it later usually costs more.

Do male and female Cocker spaniels need different crate sizes?+

Not by much — male and female Cocker spaniels tend to land in the same 30" crate. The weight spread is small enough that one size works for both.

Is a bigger crate better for a Cocker spaniel?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Cocker spaniel who's already trained, going one size up from the 30" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
