About Saint Bernard sizing
Saint Bernards land in the giant category, so the 54" crate is the right call for most adults. Heads up: 54" crates are often a special-order item — many pet stores don't keep them in stock, so check shipping lead times before you commit.
In depth
Saint Bernard crate guide
A giant, thick-coated dog that overheats indoors
Saint Bernards were bred for alpine cold. Their double coat, thick fat layer, and short muzzle (they're mildly brachycephalic) mean that a 72°F living room is genuinely warm for them, and a crated Saint in that room will pant and struggle to sleep. Ventilation is a real concern despite the giant size — always wire crate, never covered, ideally in the coolest room of the house.
The 54" crate is the correct size. Internal height needs to be at least 36" for standing clearance.
Slow to mature, heavy on joints
Saints aren't structurally mature until 24+ months. Their joints carry substantial load throughout the growth window, and crate slippage or jumping down from any height should be treated as a real injury risk. A crate mat with grip, and a ramp for any vehicle, are worth the money.
Drooling is a Saint Bernard signature. Plan crate bedding accordingly — waterproof cover, machine-washable, replaced often. Anything nice will be ruined.
Frequently asked
Saint Bernard crate size questions
What size crate does a Saint Bernard need?+
A typical adult Saint Bernard weighs 120–180 lb and fits a 54" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 54" gives you that.
What size crate for a Saint Bernard puppy?+
Most Saint Bernard puppies do best in their adult-size 54" crate with a divider that you slide back as they grow. Buying a small crate first and replacing it later usually costs more.
Do male and female Saint Bernards need different crate sizes?+
Yes — males of this breed often run noticeably larger than females. If your dog is near the top of the 120–180 lb range, measure body length and standing height to confirm the fit.
Is a bigger crate better for a Saint Bernard?+
Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Saint Bernard who's already trained, going one size up from the 54" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
