Basset hound crate guide

Basset spines carry more weight than most owners realize

Bassets are chondrodysplastic like dachshunds, but they also carry 40–65 lb of body weight on those short legs — genuinely heavy for the frame. Their backs are under sustained load simply from standing up, and jumping down from any height is a bad idea. Keep the crate on the floor, use a ramp if it has to be elevated, and never encourage a basset to jump into or out of a car or SUV.

Inside the crate, a firm high-density foam mat is worth the money. Bassets sleep hard and long, and pressure sores on elbows are common on cheap thin mats.

Sizing: length wins over height

Weight suggests a 36" crate for most adult bassets, and that's right for length. Height is generous — bassets are only 12–15" at the shoulder — so you can use a lower-profile crate if space matters. What you cannot compromise on is length: bassets stretch out and cannot curl into a shorter enclosure comfortably.

Nose-driven and stubborn about complaint

Bassets are scent hounds — their brains are running the nose full-time. Crate enrichment that involves smell (a treat frozen inside a wet KONG, a snuffle mat) works better than toys that involve throwing or chasing. They're also famously vocal, with a low, carrying bay that neighbors notice. As with dachshunds: never open the crate door while the dog is baying. Wait for silence, even briefly, before releasing.

Frequently asked

Basset hound crate size questions

What size crate does a Basset hound need?+

A typical adult Basset hound weighs 40–65 lb and fits a 36" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 36" gives you that.

What size crate for a Basset hound puppy?+

Most Basset hound puppies do best in their adult-size 36" crate with a divider that you slide back as they grow. Buying a small crate first and replacing it later usually costs more.

Do male and female Basset hounds need different crate sizes?+

Yes — males of this breed often run somewhat larger than females. If your dog is near the top of the 40–65 lb range, measure body length and standing height to confirm the fit.

Is a bigger crate better for a Basset hound?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Basset hound who's already trained, going one size up from the 36" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
