A giant water dog with a coat that traps everything
Newfoundlands were bred for cold water work — they have a dense, oily double coat that repels water, insulates against cold, and unfortunately also traps heat and holds moisture. Crated in a warm room, a Newf will overheat before you notice. Crate ventilation matters more for this breed than for any other giant. Wire only, never covered, ideally with airflow across the crate.
The 54" crate is the size, internal height 36"+ minimum. Newfs are more compact than a Great Dane at the same weight but heavier through the chest and shoulders — the crate needs to be wide enough for the barrel body, not just long enough.
