The smallest breed needs the smallest crate — genuinely
Chihuahuas are 2–6 lb as adults. The 18" crate is right, and unlike almost every other breed, sizing up is actively counterproductive: a Chi in a 24" or 30" crate feels exposed and vulnerable, and often refuses to settle. Smallest recommended size, cozy bedding, ideally a covered crate or a soft carrier-style enclosure for the sense of security.
This breed also does well with the crate elevated to bed height rather than on the floor. It's warmer, less drafty, and makes the dog feel less prey-vulnerable.
