About Chihuahua sizing

Chihuahuas stay small as adults, so the recommended crate is genuinely sized for them — not oversized. If you're crate-training a puppy or want extra room to stretch, many owners size up by one (e.g. a 24" instead of a 22") for comfort.

Chihuahua crate guide

The smallest breed needs the smallest crate — genuinely

Chihuahuas are 2–6 lb as adults. The 18" crate is right, and unlike almost every other breed, sizing up is actively counterproductive: a Chi in a 24" or 30" crate feels exposed and vulnerable, and often refuses to settle. Smallest recommended size, cozy bedding, ideally a covered crate or a soft carrier-style enclosure for the sense of security.

This breed also does well with the crate elevated to bed height rather than on the floor. It's warmer, less drafty, and makes the dog feel less prey-vulnerable.

Cold, small, and fragile

Chihuahuas lose body heat extremely quickly. A wire crate on a tile floor is genuinely cold for them — use a soft cave-style bed or a fleece-covered crate pad. Sweaters in cool weather aren't cosmetic for this breed.

They're also fragile: dropped Chihuahuas break legs. Never crate at high heights where a child could pull the crate down. Ground level or bed height is right; kitchen counter is not.

Frequently asked

Chihuahua crate size questions

What size crate does a Chihuahua need?+

A typical adult Chihuahua weighs 2–6 lb and fits a 22" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 22" gives you that.

What size crate for a Chihuahua puppy?+

Puppies of small breeds usually fit the adult 22" crate from the start — use a divider to shrink the space while house-training.

Do male and female Chihuahuas need different crate sizes?+

Not by much — male and female Chihuahuas tend to land in the same 22" crate. The weight spread is small enough that one size works for both.

Is a bigger crate better for a Chihuahua?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Chihuahua who's already trained, going one size up from the 22" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
