Siberian husky crate guide

Huskies are escape artists first, sled dogs second

Siberian huskies are among the most notorious crate escapers of any breed. They have exceptional problem-solving skills specifically applied to confinement — pushing latches, chewing corners, lifting pans, opening slide-bolts with their teeth. A husky crate needs two-point latching (top and bottom), and many husky owners add carabiners to every closure as a matter of routine.

The 42" crate suits most adults (35–60 lb). Buy quality — a husky that learns it can escape a cheap crate will escape every crate you buy after that. Escape-proof crates specifically marketed for huskies exist and are worth the money.

Cold-weather coat, warm indoor rooms

Huskies were bred for -40°F Siberian winters. Your 70°F living room is genuinely warm for them, and a crated husky in summer will pant and struggle. Wire crate only, coolest room, no covers, and consider a floor fan. Never shave a husky as a heat management strategy — the double coat actually protects against heat as well as cold if left intact.

Vocal, and needs enormous exercise

Huskies howl. They also "talk," a signature breed vocalization that neighbors will notice. A crated husky who's under-exercised will vocalize for hours. There is no training fix; the fix is exercise. This breed needs 2+ hours of real physical work daily. Under-exercised, they destroy crates, howl, and dig. Properly exercised, they sleep. It's binary.

Frequently asked

Siberian husky crate size questions

What size crate does a Siberian husky need?+

A typical adult Siberian husky weighs 35–60 lb and fits a 36" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 36" gives you that.

What size crate for a Siberian husky puppy?+

Most Siberian husky puppies do best in their adult-size 36" crate with a divider that you slide back as they grow. Buying a small crate first and replacing it later usually costs more.

Do male and female Siberian huskys need different crate sizes?+

Yes — males of this breed often run somewhat larger than females. If your dog is near the top of the 35–60 lb range, measure body length and standing height to confirm the fit.

Is a bigger crate better for a Siberian husky?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Siberian husky who's already trained, going one size up from the 36" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
