About Miniature schnauzer sizing

Miniature schnauzers stay small as adults, so the recommended crate is genuinely sized for them — not oversized. If you're crate-training a puppy or want extra room to stretch, many owners size up by one (e.g. a 24" instead of a 22") for comfort.

In depth

Miniature schnauzer crate guide

A terrier-brained escape artist in a small body

Miniature schnauzers are 11–20 lb, so the 22" or 24" crate fits. What sets the breed apart is temperament: they're terrier-descended, opinionated, vocal, and surprisingly determined about defeating crates. A mini schnauzer that decides the crate is boring will chew door hinges, work latches, and dig at pans. Two-point latching and a mid-grade crate rather than the cheapest small wire model.

They also bark. A lot. At everything. Position the crate away from windows and doors, and understand that some barking is genetic rather than trainable.

Coat and grooming

The schnauzer double coat is wiry and needs regular grooming. Long crate sessions with a plush bed will mat the leg furnishings. Smooth firm mats, and grooming every 6–8 weeks, keep it manageable.

Frequently asked

Miniature schnauzer crate size questions

What size crate does a Miniature schnauzer need?+

A typical adult Miniature schnauzer weighs 11–20 lb and fits a 30" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 30" gives you that.

What size crate for a Miniature schnauzer puppy?+

Puppies of small breeds usually fit the adult 30" crate from the start — use a divider to shrink the space while house-training.

Do male and female Miniature schnauzers need different crate sizes?+

Not by much — male and female Miniature schnauzers tend to land in the same 30" crate. The weight spread is small enough that one size works for both.

Is a bigger crate better for a Miniature schnauzer?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Miniature schnauzer who's already trained, going one size up from the 30" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
