Beagle crate guide

Scent-driven, food-motivated, famously vocal

Beagles are pack hounds bred to bay while trailing rabbits. That temperament produces three specific crate issues: they bay when they want out (loud, low, carrying), they follow their nose over any barrier if given the chance, and they eat literally anything. The 30" crate fits most adults (20–30 lb).

Baying in the crate is not a training failure — it's the breed. What matters is never releasing a barking beagle, so the barking doesn't get reinforced. Wait for a genuine pause, even a two-second breath, before opening the door.

Escape and food theft

Beagles are the second-worst crate escapers on this list (after huskies). They dig at pans, chew at latches, and have famously stubborn problem-solving stamina. Two-point latches, mid-weight crate construction, and never leaving food anywhere near the crate all help.

Beagles will eat foreign objects at a rate matched by few other breeds. Bare crate pan with a rubber-backed mat is safer than any fabric bed until at least 2 years old, and honestly for most beagles their whole lives.

Frequently asked

Beagle crate size questions

What size crate does a Beagle need?+

A typical adult Beagle weighs 20–30 lb and fits a 30" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 30" gives you that.

What size crate for a Beagle puppy?+

Most Beagle puppies do best in their adult-size 30" crate with a divider that you slide back as they grow. Buying a small crate first and replacing it later usually costs more.

Do male and female Beagles need different crate sizes?+

Not by much — male and female Beagles tend to land in the same 30" crate. The weight spread is small enough that one size works for both.

Is a bigger crate better for a Beagle?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Beagle who's already trained, going one size up from the 30" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
