Border collie crate guide

The smartest breed, and the hardest to crate correctly

Border collies are widely considered the most intelligent dog breed, and that intelligence is a double-edged sword when it comes to crating. A Border collie without a job will invent one, and the job they invent while crated is usually "escape this crate" or "bark for hours." You cannot manage a Border collie's crate needs with a physical solution; you have to meet the mental and physical needs first.

The 36" crate fits most adults (30–45 lb). Two-point latches are worth it — Borders will absolutely learn how simple latches work if left alone with them long enough.

Herding brain in a crate

This breed was developed to think independently, at a distance, all day, while working sheep. That's the brain you're crating. Short training sessions (5–10 min of obedience or trick work) before a crated rest do more for a Border than a long leg-tiring walk. Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, and frozen KONGs turn crate time into mental work rather than sensory deprivation.

Border collies also famously fixate — on shadows, lights, cars, moving anything. A crate positioned where the dog can see reflections or moving lights will produce hours of obsessive staring and often shadow-chasing behaviors. Position for calm, not stimulation.

Frequently asked

Border collie crate size questions

What size crate does a Border collie need?+

A typical adult Border collie weighs 30–45 lb and fits a 36" crate. The crate should let your dog stand without ducking, turn around, and stretch out on their side — the 36" gives you that.

What size crate for a Border collie puppy?+

Most Border collie puppies do best in their adult-size 36" crate with a divider that you slide back as they grow. Buying a small crate first and replacing it later usually costs more.

Do male and female Border collies need different crate sizes?+

Not by much — male and female Border collies tend to land in the same 36" crate. The weight spread is small enough that one size works for both.

Is a bigger crate better for a Border collie?+

Not for house-training — a crate that's too large lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other. For an adult Border collie who's already trained, going one size up from the 36" is fine if you want extra stretch room.
